Course & Scenery
The Cantigny 5K was fun and scenic, even with a course that’s a bit circuitous. The start and finish share the same location, and the route winds through the Cantigny grounds with several down‑and‑back sections. What it lacks in straightforward flow, it makes up for in beauty. Fall pumpkin displays, the Idea Garden, and the iconic tank park all add charm and seasonal color. Mile markers were clear, friendly volunteers guided us through the course, and the grounds themselves are impeccably maintained.
Race Organization
Packet pickup was seamless. Runners could grab their bibs either the day before at the Visitor’s Center or on race morning. Communication was clear, parking was plentiful, and the start line was easy to navigate. Everything felt smooth and runner‑friendly.
Aid Stations & Amenities
There was one self-serve water stop between miles 1 and 2. Medical volunteers were available if needed throughout the course. Post‑race amenities included water, fruit, and bagels. The American Legion hosted a pancake breakfast that runners and spectators could enjoy either before or after the race.
Atmosphere & Crowd Support
Spectators were sparse, but the people who came out, including friendly volunteers, locals, and a few enthusiastic dogs, brought great energy. The vibe was relaxed, welcoming, and community‑oriented rather than high‑intensity.
Swag & Medals
Runners received a long‑sleeve technical tee featuring the race logo which was perfect for fall running. All finishers received medals. Awards were given for 1st–3rd place in each category. Families will appreciate the one‑mile kids race that follows the 5K, complete with its own awards.
Weather & Timing
Race morning started around 40 degrees and warmed quickly under sunny skies. Chip timing was accurate and results were posted promptly.
Personal Performance
I ran a personal best using my run‑walk interval strategy, which felt especially smooth on this course. The minimal uphill sections made it easy to settle into a steady rhythm. The cool 40‑degree start helped me stay comfortable from the first mile through the finish. The best part is that, so far, I am not experiencing any post-race discomfort like minor muscle aches and pains.
Final Ruling
The Cantigny 5K is a charming, well‑organized community race with beautiful scenery and thoughtful touches for families. The course may be a bit twisty, but the atmosphere, volunteers, and fall visuals make it worth the miles. Most importantly, it benefits a great cause: the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans.
Verdict: Worth the Miles
