As I get ready for the RunDisney Springtime Surprise 10K, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it really takes to pack well for a destination race. Running at Disney is magical, but it also means traveling with gear you really do not want to forget. To make sure I’m prepared, I’ve been pulling together my own checklist. I’m also revisiting some expert advice, especially the helpful tips from Women’s Running in their article, “7 Tricks to Pack for Your Next Race Like a Pro.”
One of the biggest takeaways from the article is the idea of laying out your entire race‑day outfit ahead of time (from socks to sunglasses) so nothing gets left behind. It sounds simple, but it’s amazing how easy it is to forget something small (yet essential) when you are excited or rushed. I will definitely do the full flat‑lay before I zip up my suitcase.
Another tip I loved is to pack duplicates of your must‑haves, especially things like gels, socks, or hair ties. Travel delays happen, luggage gets tossed around, and the last thing you want is to scramble for a replacement the night before your race. I’m also taking their advice to keep my race shoes in my carry‑on.
Since this is a Disney race, I’m also thinking about the fun side of packing:
- A spring-themed outfit that’s comfortable enough to run in
- Throwaway layers for the early‑morning start (RunDisney collects, cleans, and donates clothing dropped by runners along the racecourse to charity)
- Plenty of sunscreen (Florida sun waits for no one)
- A small bag for post‑race snacks, photos, and the bus ride back to the resort
My favorite thing about preparing for a destination race is that it makes the whole experience feel like a mini‑adventure. With the Springtime Surprise 10K on the horizon, I’m excited to get everything organized so I can focus on the fun, the miles, and the magic.
Fellow runners, any pre-packing tips to share? How do you prepare for destination races or RunDisney weekends?
