Running Into Spring: St. Patrick’s Themed Races

There’s something special about St. Patrick’s Day themed races. Maybe it’s the burst of green after a long winter, the playful spirit of the holiday, or the promise of spring on the horizon. Whatever the reason, these races have become some of the most joyful ways to shake off the cold and start a new running season. Two of my favorite events, the Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago and Shamrock Marathon Weekend in Virginia Beach, capture that spirit perfectly. While I’m skipping racing this year to focus on Disney’s Springtime Surprise 10K, I have enjoyed both races in the past.

Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle (Chicago, IL)

My hometown of Chicago knows how to put on a show. This 8K starts and finishes in Grant Park, Chicago’s lakefront playground. It then winds through the heart of the city with all the energy you would expect, including live music, cheering crowds, and plenty of green gear. At the post-race party, all Shufflers of age with bibs will receive one Goose Island brew.  Additional Chicago classic food and drink will be for sale in the Buckingham Fountain area during the end of race celebration.

What makes the Shuffle so special is its mix of fun and challenge. It’s long enough to feel like a real accomplishment after winter training, but short enough to welcome runners of all levels. Because it’s one of the first major races of the year, it’s a great way to test your fitness and set the tone for spring.

Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend (Virginia Beach, VA)

Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend in Virginia Beach features distances ranging from the 8K to the half and full marathon. It’s a true celebration of running complete with breathtaking ocean views, encouraging spectators, enthusiastic local entertainers, and a famously festive finish line party.

The atmosphere is pure joy with runners decked out in green, coastal breezes, and a post‑race celebration that includes Irish stew and beer. Whether you are chasing a PR or soaking up the beachside vibes, it’s a race weekend that feels like a mini‑vacation.

These events remind me that running can be playful, social, and full of celebration. Many runners use them as a tune‑up for spring races, while others simply enjoy the festive atmosphere and the excuse to wear shamrock socks. What are your favorite springtime races? Please send them on, I’d love to add them to my racing wish list.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day runners! As you run through life, may your laces always stay tied and your socks never slip!

Hi, I’m Catherine

I’m a lawyer, law professor, and runner chasing a long-postponed dream. I turned 40 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, just as I was training for my first marathon. Life had other plans. Now, at 44, I’m back on the road with miles to run and lessons to share.
